For four years in a row, my friends and I have been kayaking in the summer on Ladoga skerries. At some point, I found that it is worth finding the most beautiful place on the island, from which the most beautiful view opens up, and on which you feel calm, then you should look around and it turns out that you are standing on the foundation of an old house, you can notice an old lilac bush nearby or currants and sometimes a well nearby.
These houses belonged to Finns and Karelians, who were resettled from these places in the years 39-40, and mainly Belarusians settled in their place. This was due to the fact that Belarusians, as residents of a similar climate, can get used to it, but now on the islands of Ladoga skerries, we often meet forgotten foundations.
These places have an enchanting and attractive property for me. Untouched, not subjected to deforestation of the last 50 years forests on the islands and the vast open water of Lake Ladoga around. And the horizon is visible, which is in a wave-like color change.
And on the other hand - the indescribable sadness at the thought of people who lived here from generation to generation, and forced to leave their homes and leave the economy, I am very painfully experiencing this story. On each island I find places where people lived, to see and imagine how they lived.
The image embodying the idea
The main image that embodies Ladoga, prevails over everything is the horizon line, A lot of images of different Ladoga. Horizons of the Open Ladoga.
A very important image of the islands is the house, or rather the shadows of houses, ghosts of houses, the house that has lost the people who cared for it, the image of people who left the house.
There is such a ritual in Russian culture - to sit on the track. Before leaving on a trip, sit down and stop for a moment the hustle and bustle of fees and exits. To be in the moment. To stop time. When you see the foundation, you can stop and think a little about those who built it, that it is a pity that he had to leave the house, and that it shouldn't happen again.
